“(Parenting) doesn’t feel maternal or paternal to me. It just feels like me and my individual relationship with him (his son). It just all feels the same to me. I think the only time where it might have felt a little different was breast-feeding, and at that point I wasn’t really thinking about gender all that much. But that definitely felt, in my memories, like a very kind of maternal, nurturing thing...The reality is, I do a lot of the parenting all by myself, and there’s a lot of people out there – queer, straight, gender-queer, gender-normal, whatever – who are single parents who do the mothering and fathering. And so internally it doesn’t really feel different anymore – it’s just parenting.”
